Believe it or not, the common man can experience tragedy. Heartache, pain, and misery are observed by all people regardless of status. I've come to this conclusion due to an article by Arthur Miller entitled Tragedy and the Common Man. Miller discusses that an important aspect of tragedy is the idea of securing personal dignity. He also says that we are analyzing too much. Everything is broken down into its smallest parts and we scrutinize every little piece. We're so concerned with being politically correct and not offending people that we lose the entire enjoyment out of several different aspects of life. I strongly agree with that. Sometimes, I think that we just need to shut up and listen. I found it interesting when Miller said that the definition of tragedy, as defined by the dictionary, is a sad story. Is Hamlet just a sad story? Is Romeo and Juliet? There is more to them than just an unhappy ending. Far far more. I believe that we need more tragedies that are specific to our age. Maybe we've forgotten how to write epic tragedies, but I definitely agree with the idea that we can no longer relate to the nobility and kings of the older tragedies. We need more relatable characters.
